PKM is a (silent) revolt against big tech
How personal knowledge management (PKM) helps us design intentional, distraction-free digital interfaces
Most of the digital interfaces we interact with on a daily basis are highly distracting and harmful. Many of us "doomscroll" and grab the phone at the slightest hint of boredom.
Most people that want to restore their sanity, attempt to avoid digital technologies all together. But, there is another way.
We can replace "bad" digital interfaces with "better" ones. If we want to reclaim a better experience with technology, we need to actively shape interfaces that are more meaningful to us.
Using PKM to design better interfaces
How can and should we design these interfaces?
There are many ways, but I (and many others) have found that PKM (personal knowledge management)—the practice of filtering all your (personal) information—transforms the way you interact with technology.
In a sense, most of us already do PKM, since we all encounter, capture, and store information. But without the right approach, this often leads to (information) overwhelm and frustration. By shifting how we understand information, alongside the use of more suited methods and tools (like Obsidian and Notion), we can start to organise all the relevant information in our lives more effectively.
PKM addresses (and solves) the core issues created by intrusive digital interfaces. With PKM, we can shape and architect different interfaces that aligns with our goals, interests, and life purpose, instead of defaulting to interfaces that big tech companies have built to commoditise attention for profit.
In this way, PKM is a (silent) revolt: a way to reclaim agency and meaning in a digital world designed to distract us.
If you are interested in starting with PKM, I might be able to help. Either read here for more information (link: https://build-your-info-system-yt7i48a.gamma.site) or directly book a free call (link: https://book.morgen.so/makilic9950/gtlwje).
For anyone interested in meeting people that are obsessed with PKM—and that like to help you for free—there is a meetup on Friday in Utrecht (close to central station) organised by Digital Fitness. I will also be there, so it could be a great opportunity to meet! (link for more information: https://start.digitalefitheid.nl/c/agenda/meet-greet-learn-37). (Note: It's Dutch, but English speaking people are also welcome!)
